I'm an American photographer living in Japan. I take photos and talk about them. Sometimes other stuff too, random bits from my brain and whatnot.

One of the things you nearly always see at Shinto Shrines are small wooden plaques, called ema (絵馬). You write a wish or prayer on these things and hang it up, hoping the local kami (spirit or god) will take the time to read it, consider what you wrote, and grant it to you. There are various kinds of ema: For good marriage, healthy birth of child, success in business, etc, or you can buy blank ones and write your own message.
The ema shown above are showing this year’s zodiac animal, but you might see all kind of other designs on them. Usually they are always in Japanese, but at bigger shrines you do see them in different languages.
See other Shinto Shrine related things.
This is my entry in this week’s Show Me Japan event. As mentioned last week, this is a event that collects various Japan related photos from various bloggers every weekend. Some great entries last week, and likely to be for this one too. Go check it out.
